As we age, we lose muscle mass and the less muscles we have, the more stress we put on our joins. “Use it or lose it” phrase should have been created for joins.
Let me tell you a little story about my dad. When I was a little girl back in Russia, my dad was hospitalized with some heart problems, and had difficulty moving around let alone exercising. After being discharged from the hospital, he did a lot of research into joins and heart health and discovered books by Nikolay Amosov. This Russian heart surgeon from 1950s developed the physical training system called “1,000 movements” – a routine of 10 exercises, each repeated 100 times. To this day, it is one of the best routines for restoring and maintaining joint mobility. My dad started following it in his 40s. Little by little he got better, and has not stopped since. That was ages ago! My father is now in his 80s. And I am happy to report that he refuses to take an elevator and climbs stairs to his 5th floor apartment every single day! I am so proud of him!
